Managed vs Unmanaged Volunteerism
Some organizations on Do Some Good host volunteer opportunities, have formal application processes, scheduled shifts etc. These would be managed volunteer positions where you would apply to them and formally log hours against it all in Do Some Good. The position, once you were approved to attend would automatically appear on your profile and update as you logged hours or the coordinator did it on your behalf.
There are also times where you are just looking to record some volunteerism in your profile and you may not even be connected with the organization any longer or they are not using Do Some Good. This is what we call unmanaged volunteerism and you are welcome to record volunteer hours for past or current volunteer opportunities on your Do Some Good profile. If you add an unmanaged volunteer position, and log hours toward it, if that organization is on the Do Some Good platform, they will have the opportunity to approve/verify those hours if they chose to do so.
If you volunteer for an organization that you feel would be able to make use of Do Some Good but do not have an account, we encourage you to share your experience with them, there is always a free version of Do Some Good available to any not for profit or charitable organization.
Adding New Volunteer Experiences
You can add a volunteer role you are currently actively volunteering for as well as historical volunteerism that you may or may not be participating in any longer. The end result is a comprehensive volunteer history for you.
If you are applying to an active position on Do Some Good managed by an organization or business, the position will automatically be added to your profile as you apply, get approved and log hours. If however you are trying to record volunteerism that is not for a formal Do Some Good opportunity, you can add it to your profile manually and record your volunteerism as it happens.
To Add a NEW volunteer position simply go to your profile, which can be accessed from the top menu or from your name tab on the right side of the screen. There are a number of questions and prompts asking you about the organization you volunteered for, your role, skills required and the date you first volunteered. You are free to pick an organization that exists on Do Some Good or add a new one, you can even invite the new organization to join Do Some Good while you are at it. Once all of your information is added, your position will be added to your volunteer profile.
Logging Hours for Your Active Positions
Once your position is saved to your profile you can log hours toward it. This can be done from the 'Log Hours' option at the top of the screed (or main menu in the app) or from the dropdown menu next to your position on your user profile. Simply follow the prompts to log hours for your chosen volunteer position.
If you have a managed position with scheduled shifts, you will see the list of shifts you were scheduled to attend and log hours for that shift with just a couple of clicks.
Not sure WHY you should log your hours? Here are 4 Reasons WHY to Log your Hours, and how logging hours can help your cause, community, company and yourself!
Editing Submitted Hours
Everyone makes a mistake from time to time and if you think you have entered an incorrect value in your hour log, you can review the logged hours and make changes as necessary.
From the dropdown next to your volunteer position, click 'Edit submitted hours'
A dialog box will be displayed with all of your recent hour logs for that position, any hours that are not approved by a volunteer coordinator can be edited or deleted entirely.
NOTE: You can not edit hours for a managed position once the volunteer coordinator has approved the hours.
Logging Hours For Previous Years/Months
If you want to record previous volunteerism, whether or not you are still active in that position, you follow the same instructions above to add a position to your profile. The difference comes in when you want to log hours. You start by logging hours in the normal way for the position, however, for the date, click the 'Don't Remember' link. That will allow you to pick not just a particular day, but you can log hours for a month or an entire year. For a long term volunteer role you have had, you can enter your best estimate for the number of hours for a given month or year to keep for your records.
Moving a Position to Volunteer History
If you are no longer an active volunteer for a particular position, even if you are still connected to the organization who manages it, you can mark the position as completed so it drops down to the 'Volunteer History' section of your profile. To do this, you click on the dropdown menu next to the volunteer position and select 'Move to My Volunteer History'. If this position is a managed position you will be asked for an end date of your volunteerism and any shifts after that date you will be marked as unable to attend. Once moved to history the following conditions will apply:
- You will not be able to log hours
- You will not be able to select any shifts to attend after your end date.
